So this is actually being posted very late because I got back to Georgia from California on the 29th. But I haven't made the time to write this up...largely due to pure procrastination. But anyways, the FBLA nationals in California was an experience I won't soon forget. We went on tours of Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, Hollywood, and my friends and I ventured out on our own to explore downtown Anaheim. Also, the most exciting and rewarding thing for me was getting the opportunity to see my family on my biological father's side, whom I hadn't seen in two years...they live about an hour away from Anaheim so I had a chance to spend two days and one night with them to bond and catch up...it may not have been a perfect visit, but that's not the reason I was in Anaheim, so let me get to the main reason I was out there: the competition. Sadly I didn't place.
I don't want to seem as though I'm making excuses, but I have to because I know for a fact that I could perform my speech flawlessly (which I did at regionals and state), but when I performed in CA, it was ugly...now to the excuses. 1) I had just had an eye surgery the day before we flew out to CA, and I was on a narcotic pain medication called Darvocet...I thought I would be okay even while taking it, but that proved to be a mistake. 2) I think I lost sight of the reason I was out there: to compete. I got a little too wrapped up in anxiety about family/personal affairs, and lost my edge. 3) In the National preliminaries setup, an audience is not permitted. This definitely threw me off, because I perform best with an audience, and feed off their energy. So there. I made excuses. But what's done is done. This was only my first year in FBLA, and I made it all the way to Nationals, so I'd say I still did pretty good. Besides, I've still got one more year...one more chance to show what I'm reallly capable of, so my outlook is still positive. Next year Nationals in Nashville, TN, HERE I COME!
Oh, and many business/entrepreneurial workshops and seminars were also available to attend. The one that I made time for was a workshop on personal presentation. I learned alot from it...the most valuable info that I caught was something we should already know: Body Language speaks the loudest!!
P.S. Pictures of my trip to CA are posted!
OMG!!!! This past Friday through Saturday (March 27-29) was the FBLA state competition in Atlanta, GA. I attended to compete for public speaking, and it was such a great experience and alot of fun...on Friday we started with 40 competitors in the public speaking event, and 10 moved on to the final round...I WAS ONE OF THOSE 10!!!! Then, I had to deliver my speech again in front of a different set of judges on Saturday, and that night they announced the placings. I got second place!!!! That means that I get to advance on to the National FBLA Competition in Anaheim, California!! I'm so excited! The competition takes place around the end of June, and I can't wait to go and compete, plus I have family in that area I haven't seen in years. So, everyone, pray for me and wish me luck! Oh, and I have some pictures of the state competition, but I don't feel like loading them up right now. But I will be soon, so check back for them!!!
Future Business Leaders of America Regionals Competition 2009. I place first in Public Speaking!
Future Business Leaders of America Regionals Competition 2009. I place first in Public Speaking!
Hey everyone!!!
Yesterday I competed in the Future Business Leaders of America regional competition. I was sooo nervous. There were counties from so many schools, and some I'll admit were of better quality than mine. I mean, I was competing against private schools, magnet schools, and arts academies. Anyways, the two events I competed in were Business communications and Public Speaking. Business Communication was a computer-based test, and way harder than I imagined it would be. However, I wasn't that hard on myself for not placing in the event because my adviser had signed me up for it without me ever having any time to research/study. Plus, I couldn't be mad when I GOT FIRST PLACE IN PUBLIC SPEAKING!!!! When they announced my name as the first place winner I swear I was on cloud nine, and it felt so good to have the rest of my fellow members congratulate me. Even today in school they were still encouraging! Anyways, the state competition will be in Atlanta in March. I know the competition will be alot steeper there, so I've got alot to work on. IF I place in the top two at State, then I go to the National Competition in Anaheim, California. I don't think I've ever wanted to win something so bad! Pray for me you guys!!!
P.S. I forgot to bring my camera to the competition
but I am going to post a picture of my FIRST PLACE GOLD MEDAL, and my nametag...maybe later I might post some other pics if I can get them from my friends...once again, wish me luck!
This past weekend, I attended an FBLA conference in Athens, GA that was located on the University of Georgia campus. It was a good experience and alot of fun. I was enrolled in the Business Communication track class, and I think it was a good fit for me. Judging from the weekend, I plan to attend more conferences to come! If you want to see some pictures of the conference, I've posted them!!
